U4GM - 15 Surprising Ways to Earn Runes in Elden Ring (Farming Tips)
If you’ve spent any time exploring the Lands Between, you know how crucial Elden Ring runes are in Elden Ring. Whether you’re leveling up, upgrading gear, or prepping for late-game bosses, runes are your lifeline. As someone who has clocked over 300 hours in the game — including several New Game+ cycles — I’ve discovered a range of rune farming methods that go far beyond the common farming spots. Here are 15 surprising and effective ways to earn runes in Elden Ring, whether you're just starting out or building a character for high-level PvE or PvP content.
1. Farm Albinaurics in Mohgwyn Palace
This is arguably the best rune farming method. Once you access Mohgwyn Palace (via Varre's questline or the Pureblood Knight’s Medal), head to the palace approach ledge-road Site of Grace. Use a Sacred Relic Sword or any AoE spell to clear out the Albinaurics fast — I’ve earned over 5 million runes per hour here with Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot.
2. Use the Gold Scarab Early On
Unlock the Gold Scarab talisman in the Abandoned Cave near the Smoldering Wall. Equipping it boosts rune gain from enemies. I made the mistake of skipping this on my first run, but once I got it, rune grinding became significantly more efficient.
3. Participate in PvP Duels
Invasions and duels grant runes on victory, especially in Colosseums. It’s not the most consistent method, but if you enjoy PvP, it’s a fun and rewarding alternative. I’ve received up to 30,000 runes for a single duel in higher-level brackets.
4. Clear Minor Erdtree Avatars
These mini-bosses are scattered across the map and drop Erdtree flowers and runes. They’re soloable even early on if you’re cautious. The rune reward, plus materials, make them worth hunting down.
5. Farm Soldiers in Haligtree Approach
On the way to Miquella's Haligtree, you’ll encounter groups of soldiers that are easy to backstab and drop decent runes — especially when buffed with the Gold Scarab and Fowl Foot. I used this method often while preparing my Elden Ring runes for high level builds.
6. Sell Unused Boss Remembrances
Some Remembrances aren’t worth their weight in weapons or spells. If you don’t need them, trade them for a solid rune payout at the Roundtable Hold.
7. Kill Sleeping Dragon Greyoll
Greyoll in Caelid gives over 70,000 runes on death. You can use bleed weapons to defeat her without waking the nearby dragons. It’s a one-time reward, but ideal for early leveling.
8. Run the Windmill Village Route
The frenzied dancers in Windmill Village are easy to dispatch and grant surprisingly high rune yields. Using AoE skills like Flame of the Redmanes can speed things up significantly.
9. Join Jolly Cooperation
Helping others defeat bosses via summoning signs is a peaceful way to earn runes. I helped players defeat Morgott dozens of times, raking in thousands of runes with no rune loss on death.
10. Reset Carian Manor Knights
Inside Carian Manor, the spectral knights are slow and give great runes. Use the nearby Site of Grace to repeatedly run them down. This was a favorite farming spot in mid-game when I focused on intelligence builds.
11. Take Advantage of Rune Arcs + Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot
This combination boosts your farming dramatically. Activate a Rune Arc for a temporary Vigor boost and use the Fowl Foot when clearing enemy clusters. It’s especially effective in areas like Elphael or Consecrated Snowfield.
12. Repeat Dungeon Bosses in NG+
Every time you enter New Game+, you can re-clear all mini-dungeons and their bosses. The rune payouts increase significantly in later cycles. I earned over 300,000 runes from just one catacomb boss in NG+4.
13. Defeat Night Cavalry Bosses
These only appear at night and drop good loot and runes. Some are easier than others, and a few can be cheesed by terrain or ranged combat. My favorite is the one on the bridge in Dragonbarrow.
14. Destroy Revenants in the Shaded Castle
Revenants are grotesque but give great runes. Use healing spells like Urgent Heal to deal massive damage to them. Once you learn their pattern, you can easily farm them for both runes and crafting items.
15. Buy Elden Ring Runes (Use Responsibly)
While I always encourage players to earn their runes through gameplay, some may prefer a faster path — especially if you’ve already completed the game and want to test out Elden Ring runes for high level builds. In those cases, trusted platforms like U4GM offer options to buy Elden Ring runes safely. Just ensure your account’s security and avoid any shady websites.
Earning runes in Elden Ring doesn’t always have to feel like a grind. These 15 methods reflect a mix of tried-and-true strategies and some more creative approaches I’ve discovered through personal play. Whether you're preparing for intense PvP battles or just want to explore more freely, having a healthy rune reserve will always pay off. Play smart, stay safe, and may your rune gains be bountiful!
